The 25th Anniversary of the Ground-breaking for the Custer House is Thursday, May 17, 2012”
The Fort Abraham Lincoln Foundation is celebrating the 25th anniversary of the ground-breaking for the Custer House on Thursday, May 17, by hosting hundreds of school kids on field trips from all over North Dakota, just like it does most days in May. Foundation assistant director Matt Schanandore said, “We’re all-hands-on-deck and full-up out here with school groups in May, so we celebrate by doing what we’re doing anyway - showing off the House and the Mandan village to North Dakota students. That seems like doing just what they were thinking of when they built it.” In 1987, after a five-year campaign, with the active support of State Parks Director Doug Eiken, the Foundation began construction of the Custer House. “Doug deserves a lot of credit for his vision and his steady leadership on the project,” said Foundation director Tracy Potter. “But it was people like Kermit Lidstrom, Wally Joersz, Marv Erdmann, Dan Ulmer, John Von Rueden, Marilyn Kipp and, of course, Pat Ness that raised the money, and got the job done. The community should always be thankful for their work.” Fort Lincoln is open for tours daily, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.. Gate fees are $5 per car and interpretive passes are $6 per adult, $4 per student.
